Day 9 – Improve URLs & Internal Links (Step-by-Step Guide)

The purpose of Day 9 is to create clean, descriptive URLs and improve the links between pages on the website. This helps visitors navigate the site and helps search engines discover and understand all your pages.


Step 1: Review All Website URLs

What are you doing?

Checking every page URL to see if it is clear, descriptive, and SEO-friendly.

Tool

Using WordPress – View and edit page URLs (Permalinks).

How to Access

  1. Open your browser.

  2. Go to:

  1. Log in.

  2. Click PagesAll Pages.

  3. Open a page.

Good URL Rules

  • Use lowercase letters.

Step 2: Edit the URL (Slug)

Steps

  1. Open the page.

  2. Find the Permalink or URL Slug field.

  3. Replace the old slug.

Important: If you change the URL of a page that is already live and receiving visitors, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. Otherwise, visitors and search engines may encounter a 404 (Page Not Found) error.

Step 7: Find Orphan Pages

Looking for pages that have no internal links pointing to them.

What is an Orphan Page?

An orphan page is a page that exists on the website but is not linked from any other page. Visitors and search engines may have difficulty finding it.

Why?
